Criminal Cases in the Marion County Courts
Marion County is in Kentucky's 11th Judicial Circuit and 11th Judicial District. Circuit Court handles felony prosecution after indictment, including felony pleas, trials, sentencing, and post-judgment motions. District Court hears misdemeanors, violations, and traffic matters. It also handles complaints, warrants, initial appearances, bond issues, and preliminary work in felony cases before an indictment moves the prosecution into Circuit Court.
The Marion Circuit Court Clerk is custodian of both courts' files. That shared office matters because “circuit clerk” does not mean the counter holds felony files only. A requester can ask whether a case number belongs to District or Circuit Court and request the court's docket, charge document, disposition, and sentencing order. Marion County's cities do not keep separate municipal criminal court dockets.

A Marion County criminal case search works best when it starts with a specific file. Kentucky's AOC does not act as custodian of every underlying local case document. Its name-based reports can identify Kentucky court matches, but the circuit clerk provides the pleadings and orders in the Marion file. Use every relevant access channel:

Marion Felony and Misdemeanor Court Split
A complaint or citation can begin in District Court. That court takes early steps, addresses release, and conducts preliminary felony proceedings. A felony prosecution that proceeds by indictment then moves into Marion Circuit Court for arraignment, motions, plea or trial, judgment, and sentence. Misdemeanors, violations, and ordinary traffic matters stay in District Court.

Kentucky classifies felonies from Class A through D, with capital offenses treated separately, and misdemeanors as Class A or B. The filed charge and final judgment control. A booking label should not be used to infer the final class because prosecutors can amend charges and the grand jury can return a different indictment.
What the Case File Shows
A Marion County court file records how filed accusations changed and ended. Ask for the dispositive order even when the docket seems clear. The order is stronger proof of what the court decided.
Read Each Marion County Charge Outcome
One Marion County case may hold several counts, and each can end differently. “Disposition” means the recorded status or result of a charge. A dismissal ends a count without a judgment of guilt. An acquittal is a not-guilty result. A guilty plea or verdict can lead to judgment and sentence. A nolle prosequi records the prosecutor's decision not to proceed with that charge at that time.

- A formal felony accusation returned by a grand jury; it is not proof of guilt.
- Disposition
- The outcome or status recorded for one charge.
- Concurrent sentence

- Consecutive sentence
- Sentences ordered to be served one after another.

Stages of a Criminal Case
A Marion County prosecution does not always pass through every stage, but the docket follows a recognizable order. A citation or complaint opens the trail. District Court handles the early felony phase, and a grand-jury indictment starts the Circuit Court felony prosecution. Motions and discovery can lead to a negotiated plea, trial, dismissal, or other resolution. Judgment and sentencing follow a conviction, with appeal or post-conviction activity possible later.

Marion District Court is scheduled Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9 a.m. Circuit Court is scheduled on the first and third Thursday after the first Monday. A schedule is not proof that a particular case will be heard, so confirm the next setting with the clerk.
When Marion Court Files Move
An older Marion County criminal case may no longer be onsite. Ask the clerk whether the file remains at the Judicial Center, has moved to a records facility, or was destroyed under an approved retention schedule. For a stored file, obtain both the case number and file-locator number. The State Records Center cannot search the stored court collection by a person's name or Social Security number alone.

Once the clerk supplies those numbers, the State Records Center accepts its form at state.records@ky.gov and can be reached at 502-564-3617. Pre-1978 and archival material may require Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives directions. Do not skip the clerk and send only a name to the state center.
Access & Restrictions
Marion County criminal court records are generally available through the legal custodian, but public status does not remove every limit. Juvenile matters, protected victim data, medical details, Social Security numbers, and records sealed or expunged by court order may be restricted. A public docket can coexist with a sealed exhibit or redacted identifier. Grand-jury deliberations remain secret even though a returned indictment enters the case file.

If a Marion case does not appear in a name-based result, ask the clerk about spelling, court division, filing year, storage, and any access restriction. A missing result is not enough to conclude that no filing exists.
Federal Cases From Marion County
Federal criminal proceedings are outside the Marion County Circuit Court Clerk's file system. Marion County lies in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky. PACER supplies federal docket and filed-document access after account registration under its current fee schedule. A county clerk search will not return a federal prosecution merely because the alleged conduct occurred in Marion County.

Federal and state records can concern related events but use different case numbers, clerks, prosecutors, and custody systems. Search each court at its own official source and cite the exact docket when comparing outcomes.
